Your Job Post Has 400 Applicants and Zero Good Ones. Let's Fix That.

Hiring in a small business is a full-contact sport. Here's how to stop playing it in flip-flops.

If you run a small business, you already wear every hat: CEO, accountant, IT department, and, on a good day, the person who restocks the good coffee. Now add "recruiter" to the stack. That hat is the one that doesn't fit.

Let's look at what the market is actually doing, because it's a delightfully weird moment.

The market is doing the hokey pokey

Hiring is both cautious and competitive, which should not be possible and yet here we are.

  • Caution is the mood. A G&A Partners survey found that 77% of small business owners are delaying or stopping new hires. Meanwhile, Intuit's QuickBooks index showed small businesses with one to nine employees shed 7,000 jobs in September.

  • Yet small businesses are still the hiring engine. Since early 2025, small businesses have accounted for about 80% of U.S. hires, roughly 4 million a month. Cautious, apparently, doesn't mean idle.

  • Good people are still hard to find. 47% of small business leaders say finding skilled professionals is harder than it was a year ago.

  • Flexibility is the new black. 45% of small businesses plan to increase contract or temporary hiring in the first half of 2026.

  • AI is a tool, not a replacement for judgment. 26% of small businesses are investing in AI instead of hiring. Yet 41% of small business leaders expect AI to produce a net increase in jobs over the next two years. Someone still has to manage the robots.

  • Talent knows its worth. ADP data shows job switchers saw 4.8% pay growth in September, versus 3.0% for people who stayed put. Your best candidates are well aware of this.

Translation: you can't afford a bad hire, and you can't afford to hire slowly. Fun!

The small business recruiting problem, honestly stated

Many small businesses have no dedicated recruiter, let alone an HR department, so the person writing the job post is often also running interviews and negotiating offers.

That's you. You're writing the job ad at 11pm, screening résumés between client calls, and "negotiating" with a candidate who has three other offers and a LinkedIn Premium subscription.

Copying big-company hiring tactics doesn't help either. Small businesses can't recruit the way large companies do, and imitating them is often what stalls the process. You don't have a 14-step funnel and a team of coordinators. You have a Tuesday and a deadline.

Where Infused comes in (cape optional)

Here's the pitch, minus the cheesy stock photo of a handshake.

1. We're a relationship, not a vending machine. You don't put a role in and get a stack of résumés out. We take the time to understand your business, your team, your quirks and what "great" looks like in your world. A candidate who's brilliant on paper but allergic to your culture is a very expensive mistake. We screen for both.

2. We give you your evenings back.We handle the sourcing, the vetting, the awkward scheduling and the "just checking in" emails. You meet the shortlist, not the slush pile.

3. We make flexibility easy.Need a contractor to cover a skills gap this quarter, with a permanent hire to follow if it works out? That's the kind of conversation we like. With so many small businesses leaning into contract hiring, having a partner who can flex with you matters.

4. We help you compete where it counts. You can't always match a big corporation's salary band. But you can offer faster decisions, real ownership and a team where people know your name. Spelling out what candidates gain by joining a smaller company helps them see how it could accelerate their career rather than stall it. We help you tell that story, and tell it well.

5. We care for your candidates, too.Candidates talk. A good experience makes people say your company is great to deal with, even if they didn't get the job. A bad one gets posted. We treat everyone with respect, which protects your brand while you're busy doing literally everything else.

The relationship advantage

The best time to meet a recruiter is before you're desperate. When your star employee hands in notice on a Friday afternoon, you'll want someone who already knows your business, your budget and your sense of humour, not a stranger you're briefing from scratch at 4:55pm.

A relationship with Infused means we're building your talent pipeline while you're building your business. When hiring time comes, you're not starting from zero. You're picking up a conversation we've already started.

The bottom line

The hiring market is cautious, competitive and a little bit absurd. You don't need a bigger HR department. You need a better partner.

So, let's talk. No pressure, no 14-step funnel, and I promise not to send a template email that begins "I hope this finds you well."
